Start with a proper assessment
Memory problems have many causes, and some are treatable. If your parent is forgetting more, getting lost, or changing in mood or behaviour, ask their doctor for an assessment, often with a neurologist, psychiatrist, or geriatric specialist. This guide is general information, not medical advice.
Make the home safer
Simple changes help: good lighting, especially at night; removing loose rugs; grab bars in the bathroom; labelling cupboards; locking away medicines, sharp tools, and gas keys if needed; and keeping a recent photo and ID card in case your parent wanders. Some families use a door alarm or a GPS locket.
Keep a steady routine
A predictable day — the same times for waking, meals, bath, walk, and sleep — reduces confusion and agitation. Familiar music, prayers, old photographs, and simple household tasks your parent enjoys can bring comfort. Speak calmly, one idea at a time, and avoid arguing about facts.
Getting help at home
As dementia progresses, many families bring in a trained attendant, ideally one with dementia experience. Ask agencies specifically whether the carer has handled memory loss, wandering, or night-time restlessness, and explain your parent's routine and triggers in writing.
Look after the family carer
Caring for a parent with dementia is exhausting. Share responsibilities among siblings, plan regular breaks, and consider a day center or short respite stay so the main carer can rest. Support groups for dementia caregivers exist in Indian cities, including Pune — ask your doctor or search for dementia caregiver support groups.
When home may no longer be enough
If your parent needs supervision through the night, becomes unsafe at home, or the family carer is at breaking point, it may be time to consider a memory care or assisted living home. Use our old age homes comparison guide to ask the right questions, and specifically ask how they support residents with dementia.
