You are a flight away, but you can still make a practical plan

An evening call ends with ‘we are fine’, yet you worry about meals, a fall, or who would turn up if something changed. For NRIs with parents in Pune, start by separating those worries into everyday help, company, clinical needs and emergency backup. This guide helps you prepare your own enquiries; Well Story offers free care-planning conversations, not caregiver verification, staffing, care coordination or emergency response.

Ask what your parent would actually accept

Begin with ‘Which part of your day would you like to make easier?’ rather than announcing that you have hired someone. Ask about language, preferred visit times, privacy and whether they would feel comfortable with a companion or help with daily routines. A small, agreed trial can be easier to accept than a permanent change. Include your parent in introductions and ask for their feedback privately. Being abroad does not remove their right to choose.

Make a care brief before contacting Pune agencies

Write a short brief: your parent’s Pune locality, practical tasks, days and hours, language preferences, stairs or lift access, and whether someone is needed at night. Ask a qualified clinician which tasks require a registered nurse, especially after hospital discharge. Do not assume an attendant can perform clinical procedures. Send the same brief to each agency so the quotes cover comparable work. Share necessary clinical information only with the appropriate healthcare professional or provider through an agreed secure channel—not through Well Story’s enquiry form or WhatsApp.

Build local backup that does not depend on your time zone

Agree with a willing relative, friend or neighbour who can visit in person, and name a second contact if they are unavailable. Confirm what each person can realistically do; do not assume society security will supervise care. Keep local emergency contacts and your parent’s doctor details accessible at home, with your parent’s agreement. Decide who can accompany them to hospital and who handles urgent payments. For an immediate emergency, seek local emergency help rather than waiting for an overseas call or a Well Story reply.

Verify the agency, not just its website or directory rating

Ask for the legal business name, real office address, written contact details, and who supervises the caregiver. Have a trusted local person visit if possible. Check the documents the agency provides against the relevant issuing authority; registration is not a guarantee of care quality. Ask whether workers are employees or independently placed, how complaints are handled, and whether two recent families using similar support can speak with you with their consent. Reviews and directory badges are starting points, not proof of safe care.

Check the actual person who will enter your parent’s home

Before the first shift, arrange a video introduction with your parent and a local contact. Ask about relevant experience, language, training and the tasks they will not perform. Check identity and references with consent; ask what background or police checks were completed, when, and how you can verify them locally. For nursing, verify qualifications and current registration through the relevant nursing council. Ask whether the introduced person is the person assigned to the shift. Repeat the checks for replacements; an agency’s general promise is not evidence about a particular worker.

What elder care in Pune will cost: compare the full bill

There is no single confirmed NRI care rate, and Well Story has no care packages or verified provider prices. Costs depend on attendant versus registered nurse, tasks, shift length, night cover, locality, supervision and replacement terms. Ask each provider for an itemised quote in INR covering the care fee, agency or registration charges, applicable taxes, deposits, travel, overtime, holidays and cancellation. For live-in support, clarify rest, food and sleeping arrangements: ‘live-in’ does not mean one person works continuously. For a center, ask separately about room fees, personal assistance, deposits, transport and extra support.

Build a budget you and your siblings can sustain

Use a shared sheet with these rows: recurring care fee; meals and household support; medicines and clinical appointments; supplies and equipment; transport; backup cover; and an emergency buffer your family agrees on. Keep one-time deposits separate from monthly expenses. Ask about fee increases and refund rules before paying. If you remit money from abroad, account for exchange-rate changes and transfer fees, and agree who receives invoices and checks payment details. Confirm any insurance coverage directly with the insurer; do not assume home support is covered. Compare the same duties and hours, not just the headline monthly fee.

A first message you can send an agency

‘Hello, I live abroad and am exploring support for my parent in [area], Pune. With my parent’s agreement, we are looking for [everyday tasks] on [days and hours], preferably in [language]. Please explain whether you would provide an attendant, companion or registered nurse, how you verify that person, who supervises them locally, and your written charges in INR. Please include exclusions, replacement arrangements, days off, deposit and cancellation terms. Can we arrange a video introduction with my parent and a local family contact before deciding?’ Replace the brackets with basic details and avoid sending identity documents or health records to an unverified contact.

Questions to ask on the agency call

Who exactly starts the first shift, and can we meet them? What duties are included and excluded? Who checks attendance locally? What happens if the worker is late, absent or leaves, and what cover is actually guaranteed in writing? Who answers outside office hours? How will you communicate with my parent, not only with me? Which details will updates contain, and how is consent handled? What is the total monthly and first-month cost? Who is the contractual payee? What notice, refund and complaint terms apply? Record answers and ask for the agreement before transferring a deposit.

Agree on communication without turning the home into surveillance

With your parent’s consent, agree a brief update routine: whether the visit happened, agreed tasks completed, and practical concerns needing follow-up. Decide who gets urgent calls and which messages can wait until your time zone overlaps. Speak to your parent privately as well as to the worker. Do not install cameras or share intimate care photos without informed consent; never use surveillance as a substitute for local supervision. Limit access to personal information and do not give a caregiver banking passwords, payment PINs or unrestricted access to valuables.

Start with a reviewable arrangement and watch for problems

Where possible, have a trusted local person present for the introduction and early visits. Put the trial duration, payment and exit terms in writing; review the arrangement with your parent and the provider. Missing shifts, unexplained charges, pressure to pay immediately, refusal to provide terms, or discouraging private contact with your parent are reasons to pause and investigate. If you suspect harm or your parent is unsafe, involve trusted local help and the appropriate local authorities or emergency services promptly. A remote check-in alone is not protection.

Your next step does not have to be hiring someone today

Prepare your care brief, agree a local backup contact, ask your parent what feels acceptable, then compare written proposals. Read our Pune cost guide, agency-verification checklist and nurse-versus-caretaker guide below. If you want to talk through those questions first, request a free Well Story care-planning conversation or message Yogesh on WhatsApp with your parent’s area and the everyday support you are exploring. The conversation is free; it is not a medical assessment, confirmed appointment, provider recommendation or care booking.
